Video Evaluation Script:
The classic material we selected for our performance was Beauty and the Beast. After researching the Disney story, we came across their inspiration, which came from the story of a real-life couple from the 1500’s who became known as the real-life Beauty and the Beast. This tells the story of Petrus Gonsalvus, a young man who was born covered in hair and his wife Catherine. Throughout his life Petrus is treated as an animal and a science experiment and is then forced to marry Catherine. The couple have a number of children together some of which share Petrus’ condition.
The story inspired our piece as it allowed us to take aspects of his life, such as; him being treated as a science experiment at the age of 10, his forced marriage to Catherine and the fact whilst not all of his children shared his condition those who did were taken away and given as gift to the French king, and create our performance around his life events. The fact that Petrus was also taught Latin inspired us as it allowed us to use languages such as; Bulgarian, Welsh and Romanian within our performance.
