Final Performance

“The most fundamental requirement for devising theatre is a passion or desire to say something, a need to question or make sense of a starting point that encourages you to investigate further through a variety of processes and close enquiry.” (Oddey, 1994)

What do you need to do next?

If I was to develop this piece further, I would need to consider how the music could be developed as well as the development of the overall story.

To develop the music, I would need to consider the use of different instrumentation for different sections of the music. At present all off the music is played on the same set of instruments; violin, violincello, contrabass, double bass, organ and a drum set. To develop this, I could use different instruments for different sections of the music. For example, for more tense sections of the performance higher sounding instruments would be better as they can help increase the tense atmosphere of the performance. Therefore, I could use instruments such as a flute or piccolo instead of a violincello and double bass. This change in instruments will help create a different sound for the music and using different instruments in different sections will make it easier to distinguish between the different sections of the music and to keep the movements in time with the music.

To develop the piece further, we would need to consider how the overall story could be developed. For example, we would need to consider telling certain elements of the story in more detail. Such as the education section. At present this section is shown through a very short montage whereas, it could be developed to show the beast being taught different languages as this will help to show why people came to approve of the beast.

“Those who do not have power over the story that dominates their lives, the power to retell it, to rethink it, deconstruct it, joke about it and change it as times change, truly are powerless, because they cannot think new thoughts.” (Bogart, 2014)
